Blackjack Rules

Blackjack is a card game that is popular both in land based casinos and at online casinos. Playing the game is very easy and all you have to do is get as close to a total of twenty one with the cards you have been dealt without going over a total of 21.

Blackjack can be played one on one with a dealer or with several players. The player who gets a total of 21 first or even closest to the number 21 first wins the round. There are many versions of the game in both land based casinos as well as in online casinos and many offer the option of playing multi-hand games. Some casinos have introduced live blackjack which allows players to interact with dealers in real time.

Playing Blackjack is very simple and easy to follow: the number cards from 2 to 10 are counted at face value and picture cards are worth ten points each. The Ace can be used either as 1 or as 11 depending on which combination is more suitable for the player’s cards.

The player starts off with placing a wager and is dealt with two cards face up while the dealer has two cards with one face down. Based on their card total, a player can make one of many decisions.

• They can choose to draw no more cards if the total of the cards is close to 21. This is called a Stand

• They can choose to Hit which gives them an additional card. Players can keep hitting until they get to 21 or as close to a total of 21. Should they Hit and go over, they Bust in which case they lose the bet. The same rule applies to the dealer.

• Should the dealer’s face up card be an Ace, the player can request for Insurance which protects their bet against the dealer having a Blackjack. When a player opts for Insurance, an amount equal to half their original bet is placed separately on the table. Should the dealer get a Blackjack, the player is paid 2 to 1 on insurance thus ensuring that they don’t lose their original bet. The insurance amount is lost if the dealer does not have Blackjack.

• The player can choose to Double if, after the first two cards have been dealt it appears that the third card will allow them to beat the dealer’s hand. The bet amount becomes twice the original and the player is dealt one more card.

• The player can Split their cards if the first two cards have the same value. The cards are split into two separate hands and a second bet is automatically placed equal to the original bet. The player then draws additional cards to each hand. The player can not split a split hand.

• If you are dealt an Ace and 10 as your first two cards, that is considered a Blackjack, an automatic win.

• After each round, used cards are returned to the deck and the deck is shuffled.
